2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 cup shortening
1/4 cup cocoa
1 cup water
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 tsp baking soda
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
Mix flour and sugar together. Boil shortening, cocoa, and water, then cool. Pour cooled liquid over the flour and sugar mixture. Mix together. While mixing, add the remaining ingredients. Pour onto greased jelly roll pan. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes.
Frosting
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup cocoa
6 Tbsp evaporated milk
1 tsp vanilla
4 cups powdered sugar
Melt butter, cocoa, and milk in a saucepan. Once everything is melted, remove from heat and whisk in vanilla and powdered sugar until smooth. pour over warm cake. Top with chopped nuts if desired.
