1 1/2 boxes German chocolate cake mix
1 cup nuts
3/4 cup melted butter
1/3 cup evaporated milk
60 caramels
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1 package chocolate chips
Mix together cake mix, nuts, butter, and 1/3 cup condensed milk. Put between 1/2 to 3/4 of batter in a greased and floured jelly roll pan. You may have to press it in if it will not spread. Bake at 350 for 8 minutes. Melt caramels with 1/2 milk. Pour chocolate chips over brownies. Then swirl melted caramels over chips and brownies. Do not spread. Crumble remaining batter over the top. Bake 10-12 minutes. Let cool in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before cutting. Best if kept refrigerated.
Sorry I have a lot to say about this recipe. Again I got this recipe from my sister Denise.
The recipe I have states condensed milk but I specified evaporated milk. This has been a long point of contention in our homes. I was raised in a home where condensed milk means the same thing as evaporated milk. Chelsey was raised in a home where condensed milk means sweeten condensed milk. She doesn't understand that the words condensed and evaporated meant the same thing.
I also give these brownies partial credit for how Chelsey and I met. For background, I had been living in Smithfield for a few years but had been attending a university singles ward. I didn't think I would meet anyone to date in Smithfield. They made some changes to the singles wards and wanted people that did not live close to campus to attend the singles ward closer to where they lived.
I was hesitant to get involved in the ward because I had a bad attitude. After being in the ward for a few months my roommate asked if we should try going to ward prayer. I told him I was afraid I would get sucked if I went, but I went anyway.
They asked me to bring my rakes to FHE the next night at ward prayer. At FHE I ended up volunteering to bring a dessert for a linger longer. I decided to make these brownies.
I brought these brownies to the linger longer and they were a big hit. I was on my way out the door after the linger longer when I realized I needed to grab my pan. As I went back to get my pan the wife of one of the counselors in the bishopric stopped me and asked if I would be willing to go on a blind ice cream social date and report about it for ward prayer. She set me up with Chelsey and the rest is history.
